Bondi patient Siobhan O’Toole, diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in 2018, says she believes that exercise is “as important as chemotherapy” when it comes to staying cancer free.

“People who have a heart attack or bypass surgery get extensive rehab. Knee and shoulder replacement patients get extensive exercise rehab after surgery but cancer exercise rehab is currently limited to 5 rebatable exercise sessions per year.”

To fight cancer that impacts 1 in 2 Australians by the age of 75 we need to throw everything at it.

New Weapon in fighting Cancer

Exercise is emerging as one of the most powerful weapons in the arsenal.

Siobhan says that while aerobic exercise stimulates the body’s “fight” response during exercise, weight training help turn on the body’s own immune system – so called Natural Killer (NK cells).

“I like to think of them as little AK47 machine guns that fight cancer cells in your bloodstream. Studies show exercise can reduce recurrence for breast cancer by 40 to 50%. There are no side-effects, it’s free and everyone can do it.”

Donna Moclair, diagnosed with Stage IIIC ovarian cancer is also profiled in the book, and talks about how exercise got her through chemo and two years later in 2019 she went to win the Australian National Titles of The Winter Swim.

World age duathlon champion Margaret Beardslee, rode 60km to celebrate her 60 the birthday during chemo.

“Traditionally cancer patients have been wrapped up in cotton wool or don’t exercise while undergoing cancer treatment, and as a result their condition deteriorates,”

“However, there is mounting scientific evidence that exercise may help patients endure treatments, make the treatments more effective and prevent cancer from coming back.”
